Treating hemorrhoids with the steam method

What is the steam method, and when is its use recommended?

The steam method comes to replace the traditional surgical intervention for eliminating hemorrhoids and it is used to treat large internal and external hemorrhoids. The intervention is a surgical one which takes place within the compound of the clinic, and it requires the overnight admittance of the patient.

The procedure of treating hemorrhoids through the steam method

The steam method successfully replaces the traditional surgical method, and is able to destroy hemorrhoid formations through the use of steam. This procedure makes it possible for the tissue to coagulate without burning it. The use of the steam method results in less scarring which is far superior in its quality compared to the classical surgical procedure.

The hemorrhoid issue is treated within a single 10-minute long session.

During the intervention a long-lasting anaesthetic is used to relieve the patient of any postoperative discomfort. The anaesthetic used may be local, regional or general depending on the case and the physician’s judgment. The new anaesthetic procedures applied today, provide very efficient anaesthesis. In the case of external hemorrhoids a local anaesthetic will prove sufficient.

The advantages of the steam method in treating hemorrhoids

  • The method is a minimally invasive one, and the duration of the intervention is extremely short.
  • Postoperative discomfort and pain are highly reduced in comparison to the ones generated by traditional surgery.
  • The risk of anal stenosis is reduced.
  • The patient experiences a far better scarring of the tissues involved in the procedure.
  • The procedure does not interfere with the functioning of the sphincter.
  • The patient’s hospitalization and immobilization period following the intervention is shorter.

Postoperative period and recovery after the surgery

Using this method will result in a shorter hospitalization and immobilization period following the intervention, but a 48 hour home rest is recommended to the patient before taking on regular daily tasks again.

Prescription medication will be administered to raise the fluidity of the fecal matter so as to avoid causing discomfort to the patient in the first few days following the intervention.

In order to prevent the onset of sensations of pain and discomfort, a number of specific medicinal drugs will be prescribed. The medication will be jointly applied with a venotonic treatment in order to reduce the pressure in the area of the intervention.

It is recommended that the patient take sitting baths in chamomile tea in conjunction with venotonics, suppositories, anti-inflammatory medicine or creams.

Having a well-balanced diet contributes to preventing constipation in a natural way. The use of laxatives should be avoided.

The essential rule for avoiding the disease and subsequent treatment is to eliminate the risk factors as far as possible. Yet if any symptoms should appear, a consult with a specialized doctor is paramount.
